Below is a short documentary I directed with the Global Ethics & Religion Forum. We investigated the strategies that communities in India have employed for literally thousands of years to calm religious and sectarian tensions. We take an in-depth look at the city of Ahmedabad, which has only recently become polarized along religious lines. In 2002, horrific rioting resulted in the deaths of over 2000 people, the bulk of those victims coming from the Muslim minority. This is particularly interesting given that Ahmedabad is in Gandhi's home-state of Gujarat. The film below includes interviews with religious scholars and experts, including H.H. the 14th Dalai Lama, Maulana Wahiddudin Khan, Irfan Omar, and Cedric Prakash, S.J., among others.
In 2006 I spent 5 weeks shooting video and interviews at a Human Rights Centre in Ahmedabad, Gujarat - Gandhi's home state. The video below was the "souvenir" I gave to people when I returned. This was at a school about two hours outside of the city that was run by Jesuits.
Here's a version of a video I shot in India with Martin DiCicco. We went with a non-profit which has since ceased to exist. It's about the common interaction between individuals from different religious traditions inherent in Indian life, and how this has acted as a buffer against inter religious hostilities.
Here's part of an interview I conducted with Cedric Prakash, a Jesuit Priest in Ahmedabad. One of the most holy and practical people I've ever met.
Here, Fr. George talks about how he needs to do good work within the community to keep opportunities alive for three generations down the road. While he has a Ph.D. and is a full professor in Ahmedabad, he spends his weekends helping run a boys school for disadvantaged youth.
Here's a video profile I made for Corazon Familia - a non-profit that builds houses & communities in Tijuana and Tecate, Mexico. Here, the World Religions classes I taught came together to raise money and be the active builders. It was pretty fantastic. All of the music was written by the students.
